Academic Program

Rigorous and Flexible

Home Educator's Academy of Law & Innovation (HEALI-Academy) is focused on personal growth, strengthening communication skills and fostering intellectual curiosity, and offer a variety of educational programs that achieve all of these values. Each course has different options available to fit varying levels of accountability, and a teaching professional specialized in that subject. Get in touch to learn more about our programs.

At HEALI-Academy we hope to supplement your homeschool curriculum with some fun and unique courses. We hope to teach your student a new way to view the world around them whether it be learning a problem-solution technique used by many inventors, learning how to analyze both sides of an important legal matter, or learning about the skills and characteristics that propelled some of history's most highly regarded innovators. We can't wait to share our love of learning and innovating with you!

We offer three options for the same live course based on each student's expected engagement and level of accountability. We encourage you to review the three options and determine which is the best fit for your student's needs, goals, and learning style.

Our Inspire-Only option requires the least amount of accountability. Attendance for the Inspire-Only students will not be kept, homework will not be assigned or collected, and the inspire-only students will not be asked to present in class or prepare a final project, when applicable.

Our Inspire-Plus option (likely the right fit for most students) requires some accountability. For example, attendance for the Inspire-Plus students will be kept, homework will be assigned, collected, and reviewed to ensure the student is understanding the main concepts. Inspire-Plus students will be required to present/participate in class and will be expected to complete a final project, when applicable. Inspire-Plus students will receive credit for handing in assignments and completing tasks, but the quality of their work will not be graded.

Our Inspire and Require option requires the most accountability and includes biweekly one-on-one mentoring sessions with the instructor. Attendance will be kept and homework will be assigned, collected, and graded on a points scale against a rubric. Inspire-and-Require students will receive more detailed feedback. Inspire-and-Require students will also be expected to present/participate in class and will be expected to complete a final project, when applicable. If students would like a letter of recommendation for college or a job, they must take the Inspire-and-Require option of at least one course.

HEALI Scholarship: Scholarships are available for a minimal number of students during each live course. This scholarship is meant for students that are facing a financial hardship. HEALI scholarship recipients will be admitted to the Inspire-and-Require option of the course, but at a discounted price.  HEALI Scholarship students will be expected to help with some course administrative tasks, including: taking attendance, sending reminders to presenting students, and keeping a log of daily/weekly journal entries, and other similar tasks. Please reach out to us to learn more about the HEALI Scholarship application process.

Future Class Offerings

Fall 2023

Innovation I

Innovation I focuses on a problem-solution approach for solving every day problems around us. During Innovation I we will focus on the technologies of some of history's most famous inventions. We will read, study, and discuss case studies published in the Harvard Business Review, court decisions that shape intellectual property strategies, and select books or articles about incremental and disruptive innovations, including the history behind those innovations.

Spring 2024

Intellectual Property I

We will read, learn, and discuss the basic laws and protections that shape U.S. copyright, trademark, and patent laws.

We will build on some of the ideas and strategies discussed in Innovation I* as students learn how they might protect their ideas and innovations. Students will also learn "prior art" searching techniques as they research and analyze the patentability of their own ideas.

* Innovation I is not a prerequisite for this course.

Constitutional Law

We will examine some of the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark decisions to gain a deeper understanding of how cases reach the Court, how the Court actually works, and what its role might be for our future as a nation. We hope to help students better understand the merits of both sides of controversial issues.
